Confirming Your Faith Parents,

Last Sunday we completed week 2 of our class and it is strange to think we only have eight weeks left. Eight weeks might sound like a lot now, but very soon we will be making plans to recognize our kids for the effort they have made in completing the class. The topic of our last class was “Who is God.” We had a terrific discussion and our students really began to contribute and ask great questions. It is so much fun to see their mental wheels turning.

We talked about God and the Trinity. There was a lot of interest in the topic of Old Testament appearances of Jesus Christ. We know from John 1:1 that Jesus existed from the very beginning with God, and Jesus was the creator of the universe. Until His birth in Bethlehem, was Jesus just sitting on the bench waiting for His Father to send him into the game? No, most of the time when God the Father wanted to interact with people He would send his Son. Look for the phrase “Angel of the Lord” in the Old Testament, nearly every time you find this phrase you are seeing a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus. A great example is found in the book of Daniel (chapter 3) in the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace.

Below are some questions you can use to invite discussion with your child:

How long has God existed, and how long does eternity last?

According to Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1-5, who was present during creation?

Who are the members of the trinity and what are their roles?

Why did Jesus Christ leave heaven and choose to be born in a manger in Bethlehem?

Each week we hand out a Digging Deeper sheet. The purpose of this sheet is to provide additional information for your student and can be used for their quiet time with God. It isn’t really homework because we will not be discussing the Digging Deeper sheets in class. However, some students enjoy doing a little extra and this is exactly what these sheets are for. Knowing that middle school students sometimes have challenges getting papers home; we will post the week’s Digging Deeper sheet on Greenwood’s website a couple days following each class. You can get to this week’s sheet by holding down your control key (ctrl) and clicking on the following link: http://tinyurl.com/lfueo.

Next Sunday we are learning about the Ten Commandments. You are always welcome to join us in class, and we are always available to address your concerns or questions. Thank you for your dedication to your child’s spiritual development.
