Dear Parents,

This is the first parent’s email for our 2006 Confirming Your Faith class at Greenwood Community Church . It was terrific to meet your students, and if they weren’t able to make our first meeting we look forward to meeting them soon. During last Sunday’s class our topic was “What’s in the Bible.” The purpose of this lesson was to give our kids some basic tools for reading and drawing the information out of God’s Word. We also talked about how the Bible is actually a library of 66 books arranged by type of books instead of being in chronological order. The types of books found in the Bible are history, poetry/wisdom, prophecy, and gospels. For example, Acts is the history book in the New Testament. We also discussed that Job is believed to be the oldest book in the Bible and was written before Genesis. The earliest gospel is believed to be Mark even though Matthew is the first book in the New Testament.

Here are some questions to invite discussion with your child. Good times to talk about these questions are at the dinner table or driving to school or other activities.

  1.

We often call the Bible God’s Word. Why? How can the Bible be God’s Word if it was written by men (about 40 different authors)?

  2.

One of the most important steps to understanding what a passage in the Bible means is to understand its context. Why is context important?

  3.

What kind of books are in the Bible? (history, poetry, prophecy, gospels)

  4.

We believe the Bible is God’s infallible Word. What does infallible mean?

  5.

Why is it important to our Christian faith to read the Bible?

By the way, it is more important for you to take the time to discuss these questions with your child than it is for you to have all the right answers. If your child doesn’t remember discussing the question in class, and you don’t know the answer, determine to find out the answer together. We are available to answer questions either by telephone or email.

Next Sunday our topic is “Who is God,” and I’m sure we will have a very interesting discussion. You are always welcome to join us in class, and actually we appreciate your help and participation. Please have your students at the church and upstairs in the Mount Evans room by 4:00. We need every available minute. Thank you for the privilege of teaching your children more about God.

In His blessings,
